Ex-Sandakan At Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, visitors will find plenty of entertainment in observing the dynamics of the family members within a harem of Proboscis Monkeys! They’re wonderfully lively primates – honking, roaring and squealing their communication to one another! As an endangered species, endemic to the island of Borneo, they are fiercely protected. Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary was founded by a local oil palm plantation owner, who was fascinated by the unique animals, so the land was bought by the generous benefactor to remain as the proboscis monkeys natural mangrove swamp habitat. Food sources are limited for the proboscis monkey, due to the surrounding area consisting of only oil palm plantations, so to assist their nutrition requirement feeding times at the observation areas are scheduled twice a day at both platforms.
