Ex-Sandakan Green and hawksbill turtles find their refuge in the Turtle Island Park, Selingan Island is the largest island, along with Bakungan Kecil Island and Gulisan Island lie 40km north of Sandakan. On Selingan Island itself, there are basic tourist facilities, chalet accommodation and the parks’ headquarters, as well as the turtle hatchery. Frequently, turtles will swim to the shore in the evenings to lay their eggs, and the park rangers will tag the mothers, measure their carapace for data collection, and then proceed to collect the eggs for safe incubation until they are ready to hatch. Visitors are privy to the whole process of conservation efforts – a unique attraction! The rangers will bury the collected turtle eggs into the sand in the hatchery to incubate them, which can take a couple of months. Because turtles lay eggs all year round, the hatchery will very likely have hatchlings ready to be released into the wild during your stay.
